EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
The WWEST Team is proud to be able to support post-secondary students looking for Mentorship opportunities, that will enhance their passion for:
- STEM education and career fields;
- learning more and finding solutions for equity, diversity and inclusion for underrepresented people in STEM;
- being a role model for sparking curiosity and enhancing interest in STEM
Through Mentorship, WWEST offers a variety of experiential learning opportunities and professional skill-building in-services covering a variety of topics cush as communication, resume building, role modeling, organization, time management, and alike. Mentorship events and inservices are designed to work with student schedules, and provide unique on- and off-campus STEM program experiences. WWEST is open to conversation throughout the year, with individuals or groups looking to volunteer (based on available funding, WWEST may have positions for hire). Please contact us, to learn more!
Some opportunities include:
- WWEST Intergenerational STEM events, camps, and outreach programs
- community based events and camps to encourage people of all ages to enhance science communication
- on-going events and experiences throughout the year
- WWEST Campus STEM programs
- designed in collaboration with individual teachers to bring students to campus to experience STEM
- WWEST facilitated, generally between October and May
- UBCO STEM Engagement Day
- In partnership with the UBCO STEM Collective, this one-day event is held annually during November Reading Week
- general volunteer or session host
- brings 700+ , grade 2-5 students to campus to experience a day of STEM learning
- Okanagan-Shuswap Regional Science Fair
- annual event facilitated by WWEST and held at UBCO, for students in grades 3-12
- requires volunteers, judges, committee members
- School of Education, Community Field Experience
- Must be enrolled in the SoE Undergraduate Program
- 3-week experience to promote and support STEM in schools and communities
- UBCO Workstudy
- Student hires to work with the WWEST team in a variety of STEM building roles
- Based on availability of funding
Post-secondary students looking to broaden their STEM and professional capacity, will receive training from WWEST mentors, prior to chosen events.
